In April 1980, Jones (Army no. 23778667), then a staff sergeant in the Devonshire and Dorset Regiment, was awarded the Queen's Gallantry Medal in recognition of service in Northern Ireland during the period 1 August 1979 to 31 October 1979.[2]

In October 1984, as a Warrant Officer Class Two, Jones was awarded the George Medal in recognition of outstanding bravery in Northern Ireland.[3]
