She is vice-president of the British Humanist Association, vice-Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party Civil Rights and International Development Committees and vice-chair of the All Party Group on Ethiopia. She is a member of Transparency International (UK)'s Advisory Council and of the Council of the Overseas Development Institute.
