Founders/Key Members

In 1997 the Project for the New American Century (PNAC) was founded by William Kristol[1] PNAC was set up during the Clinton administration as the founders felt that there was a distinct lack of coherence with what Americas foreign policy was and what it should be they felt that America wasn't being as dominant as it should be in world politics, Kristol was the editor and founder of The Weekly Standard[2] considered one of the most Neoconservative publications of the day. William Kristol has been affiliated with many publications and neoconservative groups, he has also played a part in the US government in the Office of the Vice President: Chief of Staff to Dan Quayle, 1989-1992 and Office of the Secretary of Education: Chief of Staff/Counselor for Education Secretary William Bennett, 1985-1988. Along with Kristol PNAC also has many other notable members from the US political World, some of the most notable are Jeb Bush[3] the brother to Americas current President George W. Bush, Dick Cheney[4] the Vice President to George W. Bush, Francis Fukuyama[5] author of neoconservative literature, Dan Quayle[6] vice president to George Bush Senior, Donald Rumsfeld[7] former Secretary of Defence to George W. Bush and Paul Wolfowitz[8] who has held many government positions and was the former President of the World Bank.

Purpose

According to PNAC, America must:

  • Reposition permanently based forces to Southern Europe, Southeast Asia and the Middle East;
  • Modernize U.S. forces, including enhancing our fighter aircraft, submarine and surface fleet capabilities;
  • Develop and deploy a global missile defense system, and develop a strategic dominance of space;
  • Control the "International Commons" of cyberspace;
  • Increase defense spending to a minimum of 3.8 percent of gross domestic product, up from the 3 percent currently spent.
