Howrey has recruited Lars Kjølbye as an antitrust partner. Mr. Kjølbye joins from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Competition where his most current post was as head of the energy and environment antitrust unit.[1]

Background

The aim of Howrey in employing Kjølbye for their Brussels team is "to build a first class international antitrust/competition practice. He has the experience and world view that has characterized Howrey’s development in Europe and will further enhance our presence in Brussels as well as our ability to provide global competition service to our clients," as explained by Alan Wiseman, Co-Chair of Howrey’s Antitrust/Competition Practice.[2]

About the employment of Kjølbye, Trevor Soames, Managing Partner for Brussels and European Head of the Howrey Antitrust Practice, said “We are delighted that Lars will be bringing his intellectual firepower and expertise here to Howrey. We respect him for his work at the Commission and know him to be a first class antitrust and very commercially astute lawyer. He has been an important player in the modernization of European competition law in recent years and has a profound understanding of the issues and an ability to analyse complex competition issues across sectors. His expertise on IP related issues will be of particular value given the firm’s focus on the IP/antitrust interface. We welcome him to our firm as we continue to grow our European antitrust practice.”[3]

Lars, who is a Danish qualified lawyer, has more than 10 years experience with DG COMP. Lars has also worked as deputy head of the scrutiny unit, which provided legal and economic analysis support to case teams, and has assisted with in-depth reviews of the facts and the legal and economic arguments in complex cases. The sectors he dealt with included aviation, banking, cartels, energy, IT, music rights, pharmaceuticals, (patent) pools, sports rights, telecoms and various other disparate sectors such as the beverage industry and car repair services.[4]
