Marian Harkin, MEP

Marian Harkin (born 26 November 1953, Sligo) is an independent Irish MEP for North-West since 2004.[1]

Marian Harkin was nominated for her “outstanding commitment” towards the promotion and support of the estimated 100 million people who work as volunteers in Europe. According to the Parliament Magazine, she is praised for her “exceptional engagement and passion”, and is said to have worked to make politicians and all citizens aware that volunteering is central in building a cohesive and inclusive society based on solidarity and active citizenship.[2]

Declaration of Financial Interests

  • I employ my son John as an accredited assistant in my office in Brussels. He has been in my employment since May 2008 and is covered by Art 78 which exempts him by way of derogation from the prohibited categories under Art 43 of the Members arrangements for assistants.[4]

  • Voted against the Data Retention Directive.
  • Voted in favour of the Lisbon Treaty.
