The Gaither Committee was appointed by US President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1957, shortly after the launch of Sputnik by the Soviet Union. It concluded that the United States was in danger of losing a war against the Soviets, and that massive increases in defence spending, particularly on missile programs, were required.[1]
