The Emerging Science and Bioethics Advisory Committee (ESBAC) was set up in 2012[1] to replace the Human Genetics Commission, which was closed down following the UK government's review of Arm's Length Bodies.[2] According to an article for BioNews, "While ESBAC will take on the responsibilities of the HGC, it also has a broader remit than human genetics."[3]

The UK government Department of Health's website stated, "The committee will be responsible for providing advice to UK Health Departments on emerging healthcare scientific developments and their ethical, legal, social and economic implications."[4]
